Driving during rush hour traffic can be very frustrating, but it's crucial to keep your road rage in check. Why? The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reports that aggressive driving behaviors contribute to approximately one-third of all car accidents and two-thirds of accident-related fatalities. Use these seven tips to keep a cool head in order to make driving safer for you and everyone else who shares the road.
- Get enough rest: Sleeping for seven to eight hours each night helps you wake up feeling rested and refreshed, whereas less sleep causes you to wake up feeling irritable and sluggish. Getting behind the wheel under the latter conditions is never ideal.
- Use your ears: Turn on some of your favorite tunes or listen to an audiobook as you drive. This helps distract your brain from focusing on things that would normally irritate you while on the road.
- Breathe deeply: Deep breathing techniques help your body relax and calm down. Along with taking deep, controlled breaths, loosen your tight grip on the steering wheel to reduce tension.
- Leave Early: Running late can trigger stress and reckless driving behaviors. Plan to leave five to ten minutes early when you know you have to be at work or an appointment. This will help account for possible delays.
- Call ahead: Even the best planners run late sometimes. Simply calling work, a doctor's office or wherever you're supposed to be to let them know you're on your way can help relieve the stress associated with being behind schedule.
- Drive steadily: Avoid sudden lane changes, rapid acceleration, slamming on the brakes and turning without the use of the blinkers. The steadier you drive, the more calm you're likely to remain. Not to mention, it helps everyone else on the road stay calm too.
Don't engage in aggressive behavior: Others drivers may try to "challenge" you by revving their engines, honking, tailgating etc. Never make eye contact with these drivers or engage in similar behaviors. Keep a cool head and drive with safety in mind.
