Drunk driving is bad—you’ve heard it plenty of times. It can lead to accidents, DUIs/DWIs, injuries and deaths, but the consequences don’t end there. The impact of getting a DUI—which is generally given to drivers with a blood alcohol content level of at least 0.08 percent—reaches further than you may think, which can result in:
-
Fines
-
Suspension or revocation of your license
-
Jail time
-
Increase in your auto insurance premium
-
Difficulty finding work
-
Difficulty obtaining credit, applying for a mortgage or renting an apartment
-
SR-22 insurance
A driver with a DUI on record (a conviction that will remain on your record for a minimum of three years) is deemed high-risk and may therefore be required by the state to apply for SR-22 auto insurance. This form of coverage essentially acts as a proof of insurance because it’s filed with the DMV and police department. If you neglect to pay your premium, renew your policy or let your coverage lapse for any reason, your insurance provider must notify the DMV and the consequences could be dire.
Because SR-22 insurance is reserved for high-risk drivers, premiums are often significantly higher than normal auto insurance premiums. Additionally, not all insurance providers offer this coverage. After receiving a DUI, your current insurer may drop you, refuse to renew your policy upon expiration or simply raise your rates.
Your independent insurance agent can assist you in filing for SR-22 insurance and finding the right policy. Once you’ve fulfilled your SR-22 status requirements—which may last up to three years, or more for multiple infractions—your agent can then help you find regular auto insurance at a more affordable rate.
We’ve got you covered. Call Auto Insurance Discounters at (816) 252-2255 for more information on Kansas City SR-22 insurance.
