What is SR-22 insurance and does everyone need it? The answer to the second question is no, not everybody needs it. The answer to the first question is a bit longer.
SR-22 insurance really isn't insurance. Rather, SR-22 is really a certificate of insurance, or proof of insurance. Most states require it for high risk drivers to prove that their auto insurance policy meets the minimum requirements of the state they live in. You might be one of these high risk drivers if you:
-
Were in a car accident and did not have the required liability insurance
- Were convicted of driving while intoxicated
- Drive while your driver's license was suspended or revoked for any reason
- Have multiple tickets for violations, such as running red lights or not signaling to change lanes
How do you get SR-22 coverage? You need to contact an independent insurance agent. The agent will look at your driving record and tell you how much it will cost for the certificate. If you move, you need to work with an insurance agent and get an updated SR-22 for that state. Be careful to not let your auto insurance policy lapse if you are required to have an SR-22. You could have your license suspended.
How do you cancel an SR-22? You can't cancel it, but an insurance agency can help you cancel it. Once you maintain a good driving record for the period of time assigned to you (often up to three years), they can file a form with the DMV that will cancel your need for SR-22 coverage.
How do you avoid needing SR-22 coverage? Be a safe driver:
- Don't drink and drive
- Follow the rules of the road
- Have at least the state required minimum auto insurance
