If you are planning a family road trip this summer, take a few minutes to focus on making the drive a safe one. Many Americans will be taking to the road over the next few months. Those with kids in tow realize the added challenge of keeping kids entertained and staying focused on the road. To avoid a car accident during your road trip, consider the following tips.
Priority of the Driver
The priority of the driver must be focusing on driving. This means the driver cannot be handing snacks to the back seat or continuously changing the radio station to meet the musical tastes of each family member. The driver needs to keep their eyes on the road so they can spot upcoming hazards. Make it known to all passengers in the car that the driver's need to focus on the road is the most important need for the duration of the car trip. This may mean their demands are temporarily ignored or postponed.
Entertainment Options
Plan some entertainment options ahead of time for your children to keep them occupied during the road trip. This is especially important if you will not have any other adults in the car to help with the kids while you are focused on driving. Here are some suggestions:
- Portable DVD Player and favorite movies
- Coloring books and crayons
- Snacks within reach that are easy to open or pre-packaged
- Water within reach
- I Spy and other car game
- Picture Books
- Audiobooks the entire family can listen to
Stops
A family road trip should not be a race. It may be tempting to try to beat the predicted time of arrival listed on the GPS, but you will have a more pleasant ride if you just accept you will get there when you get there. If the children are restless, it is probably a good idea to stop and let everyone get out and stretch their legs, even if you weren't planning on stopping at this time. If they have started bickering in the back seat, stopping for a few minutes so everyone can get away from each other may result in a more pleasant remainder of the ride.
Enjoy your family road trip this summer. And remember, always double check your auto insurance to ensure it's up-to-date before hitting the road.
