We know you are proud of your motorcycle. You have worked hard to customize your bike and keep it in great condition. When you ride your bike, people notice because it's classy and it's different than all the other bikes one normally sees on the road. That is part of the joy in riding your bike.
We want to partner with you in being sure your custom motorcycle is covered with the right insurance. Your bike might be modified to the point it is considered a chopper instead of a motorcycle. Any old insurance won't work since general motorcycle insurance probably won't replace the customization on your bike.
What kind of insurance do you need?
First, you need liability insurance, which covers you in case you cause an accident in which someone else suffers injury and/or property damage. Every motorcycle rider must have liability insurance.
Second, you need insurance that will cover your custom accessories. Some insurance companies will include minimal custom coverage with comprehensive coverage. However, your custom bike likely needs more. You need custom accessory coverage for things such as electronic equipment, sidecars, trailers, custom paint, custom exhaust pipes and any other accessories that are unique to your bike.
Third, you need insurance that covers the replacement cost of your bike. That means working with your agent to determine the value of your custom bike. You can't find the value of your bike in a blue book, so you will have to work closely with an agent to find people who can give you the value of your bike.
To help with this process, you need to:
-
Keep receipts for the custom parts you have added to your bike. If you threw those away, have a bike shop give you an estimated value for the custom parts. Save those receipts and valuations.
-
Ensure your bike is considered safe to ride. Some states require riders to have bikes inspected by the DMV to ensure safety on roads. If you do this, make sure you get a written inspection to prove your bike is safe.
-
Ensure your bike will be covered by insurance before you start modifying it. Some bikes just aren't insurable if the original frame has been cut or replaced or if they have been built from a kit.
Take pride in that bike you ride and talk with your independent insurance agent today to be sure you have enough coverage.
