Car Safety for Your Pets

It's fun to spontaneously hop in the car for a weekend road trip, but traveling with a pet requires a bit more planning. However, the extra packing is often well worth the time because it allows you to save on costly pet boarding fees. So what should you do to keep your pet safe in the car?

Before Leaving

Whether you have a dog or cat, your pet should wear a collar with tags that list your pet's name, your name, your cell phone number and proof of rabies shots. Your pet is doubly safe if it's microchipped too (hint: make sure the information stored with the microchip company is current).

Pack up your pet's food, a spill-proof water bowl with bottles of fresh water, medications and a few toys. Dogs do well with toys that keep them busy, such as chewy bones or hollow toys that can be filled with treats. Cats do well with toys that soothe them, such as catnip-filled mice. If you're traveling with a cat, be sure to purchase a portable litter box prior to leaving.

On the Road

While your pet may enjoy curling up on your lap, it's dangerous for both of you to allow that behavior in the car. You need to be able to drive without distraction and your pet needs to be secured in case of an accident, in which case your pet could become a projectile if left to roam free. Instead, keep your pet in a well-ventilated crate that's strapped down in the backseat. It should be big enough for your pet to stand, turn around and lie down. It's a good idea to line the bottom of the crate (underneath your pet's cushion) with an absorbent material, like a wee pad or an old towel.

Your pet will need access to water during the trip, especially during the hot summer months. Some people plan frequent stops for rehydration, snacks and potty breaks. However, if you prefer to keep driving until you reach your destination, you can freeze a bowl of water before leaving, so your pet can lick it for hydration during the trip. Remember, never leave an unattended pet in the car. The interior of your car can quickly become too hot to sustain a safe environment for your furry friend.
