Do you dread the thought of storing your motorcycle for winter? Some people love biking so much that they choose not to let the weather stop them. However, if you ride during winter, you’ll need to protect yourself from the biting, bone-chilling winds. One of the simplest ways to do that is to install a windshield, which diverts the wind around the bike. Here are a few more ideas for staying warm during winter rides.
Clothing
Start by putting on a good base layer that is both warm and easy to move around in. Cotton long johns or fleece underwear are popular choices; the more snug, the more body heat you will retain. Choose a pair of pants that has a fleece or flannel lining and throw on a comfy shirt with it. On top of the shirt, it’s a good idea to wear vest made of thermal material like fleece. This will help keep the cold wind off of your body.
Finally, don a jacket made of a material that deflects wind, such as leather, Kevlar or Cordura. A jacket that has elastic around the waist and wrists will help keep the wind from chilling your skin. It must also be flexible enough to allow your full range of motion. Top off your riding clothing with a pair of wool socks and wind- and waterproof boots to keep your feet and ankles warm while riding.
Accessories
A helmet is the most important motorcycle accessory at all times, and winter is no exception. A full helmet is your best option because it helps keep heat trapped around your head and the face screen protects your eyes from the wind.
Apart from a helmet, some people like to wear a scarf or bandana around their neck to block the wind from reaching the space between the jacket collar and helmet. Windproof gloves are also a must to protect your hands from windburn. Wear a pair with either elastic around the wrists or a clasp to keep them snug against your skin.
